Rowan Class Information

It has been such a joy to have a full classroom once again! As the children settle back into their new routine we shall be keeping the class timetable flexible. As was the case with home learning, we shall be prioritising phonics, reading and maths. All phonics lessons will include spelling practise and sentence writing. Handwriting is also a big focus for our Foundation children, as they learn to form their letters in the precursive style. Please scroll down for more information about each of these subject areas and how you can help your child at home.

Home Learning Pack Foundation

Home Learning Pack Year 1

Phonics and Reading

All children have a daily phonics lesson. Foundation children are learning to read phase 3 sounds and words, to spell phase 2 tricky words and write simple sentences. Year 1 are learning to read and write phase 5 sounds and words, to spell tricky words from every phase, and to write sentences including the phonemes and tricky words they have been taught.

Handwriting and Spelling

Foundation children are learning to form their letters in the precursive style. Please see the document titled "Letter formation handwriting" to see what this looks like. It is also useful for Foundation children to engage in activities to develop their hand strength. Please see the two documents "Ideas for developing hand strength" and "funky fingers" for ideas of what you can do at home! Year 1 children are learning to join their letters. Some children have moved onto narrow lines to keep their writing small. Children proficient in joined handwriting practise writing out key spellings in their neatest handwriting.

Foundation and Year 1 have separate Maths lessons. To see what goals your child is working towards please see the documents listed under "Rowan Class Information". The best way to help your child with maths at home is to use DoodleMaths regularly. If you have forgotten your login details, please email Miss McHugh.

Each half term our learning follows a theme. See below for the themes we will be learning about in the academic year 2020/21.
